WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) released the following statement after voting NO on H.Con.Res 14:

“Our residents are tired of the cuts to their services. They deserve better. I voted NO on this harmful Republican budget that betrays our families who depend on us to protect them. This is all being done to fund tax cuts for the richest people in our country like Elon Musk. At a time of massive wealth inequality, while 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, it is disgraceful that Republicans are destroying programs our communities rely on to fund huge tax breaks for billionaires and powerful corporations. We cannot afford the Republicans’ massive cuts to programs that low-income and working Americans depend on every day, including $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid, threats to the Affordable Care Act, and taking food assistance away from hungry families. This budget would also fund the militarization of our neighborhoods, sending ICE into schools, hospitals, and places of worship to target our immigrant neighbors and racially profile communities that look like ours. We cannot allow them to harm working families to pay for a $4.5 trillion handout to their billionaire donors.”

For our communities in Michigan’s 12th District, Trump’s budget would:

  • Give a $314,266 average annual tax cut for the richest 0.1%;
  • Approve $2 trillion in giveaways to CEOs and powerful corporations;
  • Put 258,179 people on Medicaid and CHIP at risk of losing their health care, including 99,882 children under the age of 19 and 22,000 seniors over 65;
  • Increase the average premium of 36,000 people who receive coverage under the Affordable Care Act by $630 per year—a 50% increase; and
  • Threaten 157,000 people who count on SNAP to put food on the table.
