Tlaib Statement on Republicans’ Extreme Anti-Abortion Care Agenda

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) released the following statement opposing the extreme anti-abortion care legislation passed by House Republicans:

“Speaker McCarthy has already relinquished control to the far-right members of his caucus to win the Speakership after 14 humiliating votes. Now, the GOP is moving forward with an extreme agenda that the American people soundly rejected in the last election. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade after nearly 50 years of precedent is deeply unpopular with the American people. We’ve seen voters in Michigan and other states across the country vote to codify access to abortion care. Still, Republicans want to ban abortion nationwide with no exceptions for rape or incest, and criminalize health care providers.

“Within days of taking the majority, after a delayed and chaotic start to the 118th Congress, Republicans brought legislation to the floor to attack abortion care and bodily autonomy. Every single person, regardless of their income, zip code, or skin color deserves the freedom to make decisions about their own body. I will continue to hold the line to mitigate the policy violence that Republicans will inflict on the American people with their extreme far-right agenda until access to abortion care is once again restored as the law of the land.”
