Tlaib Rebukes Trump’s Attempt to Eliminate the Department of Education

DETROIT — Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) released the following statement on President Trump’s executive order to eliminate the Department of Education:

“Donald Trump is a lawless president who is actively shredding the Constitution and illegally dismantling federal agencies. This executive order to shut down the Department of Education is not only despicable, it’s unconstitutional. This latest authoritarian abuse of power is an attack on 26 million kids across every school district in our country. I look forward to it being challenged in court.

“The Department of Education is critical for low-income and working class students, students of color, and students with disabilities. The Department’s federal funding ensures that all children, regardless of who they are or which zip code they are born in, can achieve a quality education. Without the Department of Education, many of our kids will be left behind, unable to receive the education they need and deserve.

“States across our country are also attempting to whitewash Black history, discriminate against LGBTQ+ students in the classroom, and roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion. Without the Department of Education, no one will be left to ensure civil rights laws are enforced in our schools.

“The majority of Americans oppose these shameful efforts to eliminate the Department of Education. Only Congress has this authority. Republicans are fully aware that a vote on legislation to abolish it would never pass Congress, so they are doing it illegally. The American people should be outraged. We will not let them unconstitutionally dismantle the Department of Education.”
