DETROIT — Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) released the following statement regarding United States Supreme Court decision in the West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency case:
“Today’s decision from this extremist Supreme Court tosses out decades of established EPA authority and precedent under one of the nation’s most effective public health laws, the Clean Air Act, in a disgusting political favor to the coal companies and other corporate polluters that will have catastrophic consequences for the 13th District, all American people and the planet.
“Each Supreme Court decision day brings new horrors from this unhinged, conservative fundamentalist Republican majority as it strips us of our rights and turns our country over to wealthy GOP donors, multinational corporations, and special interests like the oil and gas industry. Today’s West Virginia v. EPA decision will absolutely harm communities like those that I represent and create major roadblocks to agency action that will combat climate change and save our planet. This ruling underscores how vital it is that President Biden and his administration take a wide ranging and aggressive approach to climate action, and there are still countless tools at the administration’s disposal to deliver on its promises of climate action.
“The current Supreme Court is completely out of step with the values and democratic will of the majority of people across the country. This court has taken away voting rights, reproductive rights, indigenous sovereignty rights, and more, while giving more rights to guns and turning our climate and environment over to the very corporate polluters who have spent more than a century trying to destroy it.
“We are on a slippery slope when it comes to our democracy, rights, and liberties in this country. We must expand and re-balance the U.S. Supreme Court before we are beyond the point of no return, eliminate the filibuster, and pass laws overruling these illegitimate Supreme Court decisions. The Biden Administration must use every tool at its disposal to push for bold climate action to protect our families, our planet, and generations to come and in Congress we must pass the Green New Deal. We will not let them win. We will continue fighting in the streets, on the prairies, in the forests, and on our waters.”
