Congresswoman Tlaib Statement on Education Debt Forgiveness Announcement

DETROIT – Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) released the following statement regarding President Biden’s announcement of education debt forgiveness:

“Today’s announcement of education debt forgiveness from the Biden Administration shows us what happens when we organize, share the impact of student loan debt on families, and keep pushing for change. The forgiving of $20,000 in education debt for Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation for non-Pell Grant recipients will provide significant relief for individuals and families who simply want to be able to thrive.

“We must be clear in this moment though, education debt forgiveness is a racial, economic, and gender justice issue. Many people carry education debt much higher than the $10k or $20k that will be forgiven. As the largest holder of education debt, the United States Government must do more to lift this burden off the backs of people who went to school for a better quality of life. I hope the Biden Administration, along with the naysayers of education debt cancellation, realizes in the upcoming months how much this makes a difference, and moves to wipe out more debt. I will continue to push for education debt cancellation of $50k or more, and I know many people out on the streets will do the same. This is not the end, this is just the beginning when it comes to bringing opportunity and equity to all.”
