Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib released the following statement regarding President Biden’s ending of the Muslim and African Ban:

“Today, President Biden ended the racist Muslim and African Ban. When twice-impeached President Trump implemented this hateful ban, he set the tone for increased xenophobia and Islamophobia in this country. This ban has separated many families and has brought deep despair to many. The Muslim and African ban was not based on any legitimate concern, but instead was rooted in the hate that we must continue to adamantly reject in order for this country to move forward.

“As I raise two Muslim boys in the United States, I have a painful memory of my son indicating that he would hide his faith because of the hateful actions and rhetoric of many in this country – that feeling should not be a reality for anyone, no matter their background. We have much more work to do to combat racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia, and ending hateful policies like this and President Biden’s first day action is a great step.

“I am glad to see the No BAN Act, which would prevent any policy like the Muslim and African Ban from being implemented ever again, included in President Biden’s immigration plan. We must ensure this passes both the House and the Senate.

“We owe this day to the many who took action to push back against the Muslim and African Ban. I send special gratitude to all the advocates, coalitions and organizations who never gave up and organized communities across the country against this hate agenda. I know they aren't done in combating racism and hate in our country.”
